Swimming at Lake Bozel with the Family: A Practical Guide

When we picture the mountains in summer, we rarely think of swimming. Yet in Bozel, the lake is one of families’ favourite spots as soon as the sun warms up. Supervised water, a lawn for the picnic, games within reach: it’s the ideal place for a relaxed day with the children — no climbing, no stress.

A lake in the heart of the valley

Just a short walk from the centre of Bozel, the lake is easy to reach — no need to climb to altitude or hike far with the cool box and armbands. That’s exactly what makes it so precious for families with young children: you park, lay out the towel, and the day can begin.

The setting is typically Savoyard: clear water, mountains all around, and that high-altitude light that makes every swim a little more memorable.

Supervised swimming and child safety

In high season, swimming is generally supervised during busy hours — check with the tourist office for the exact dates and slots, which vary from year to year. Even when supervised, parents’ vigilance is the first safety: keep the youngest within arm’s reach, and bring armbands or a flotation suit for those who can’t swim yet.

Mountain water stays cool, even in high summer: let the children get used to it gradually, and have a warm towel ready for getting out.

Around the lake: picnic and games

The lake isn’t only about swimming. The surroundings are perfect for a full day: a picnic on the grass, ball games, kite flying, or simply a nap in the shade while the children invent their own games. Don’t forget the sunscreen — at altitude, the sun is stronger than you’d think.

Canoe and paddleboard: the lake is more than just swimming

In fine weather you will also see canoes, inflatable kayaks and paddleboards out on the water. It is a good card to play when the children start to tire of swimming: the older ones head out while the little ones stay near the bank, within sight.

Rental availability varies from one season to the next — check with the tourist office before counting on it. Many families simply bring their own inflatable gear, which remains the most flexible option.

Combine the lake with Bozel market

Our tip for a great day: start with Bozel market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings), stock up on local produce for the picnic — Savoyard cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal fruit — then head to the lake for the afternoon. A morning of discovery, an afternoon of relaxation: the perfect balance for a Discovery family.

Our other water spots in the valley

If the urge for water strikes another day, the valley has plenty of options: torrents and waterfalls to dip your feet during a walk, and the aquatic centre about fifteen minutes away for a safe bet on cooler or rainy days. Plenty of ways to vary the fun throughout your stay.
